Tired of being branded fat wherever you go? If you’ve tried every possible diet restriction plan and exercise regime and yet failed, your physician may just suggest you the surgical alternative. But before that, it is advisable that you find out more about this alternative.
Gastric bypass surgeries are generally done for those obese patients in whom all other non-invasive procedures have failed. Also, these individuals stand at high risks for various cardiovascular and other systemic conditions. Hence, surgery may be inevitable. The main principle of the surgery is to create two bags, one smaller while the other one larger thereby disrupting the functioning of the stomach, thus reducing calorie intake.
Coming to the types of the gastric bypass surgeries, there are mainly 2 of them. Roux-en-Y is a procedure, which is relatively simpler and hence more common. A segment of the stomach is closed by means of staples and thus the person feels full in spite of eating lesser quantities of food.
Extensive gastric bypass, a more complex procedure, involves removal of the lower part of the stomach itself. The remainder is attached to the small intestine thus reducing food intake.
These procedures have been effective. Follow ups showed that most of the individuals had lost around 65% of their extra weight within a couple of years after surgery. However, there have been many complications sighted with this procedure. For one, the stomach size could revert to its pre-operative state. Secondly, due to reduced food absorption, even the nutritional substances suffer. Thus a deficient state may occur. Soon after surgery, a person may even feel weak, vomiting and diarrhea are common features while gall stones can occur over a period of time. Lastly, in case there is any leakage of the gastric acid, it could affect one’s abdominal organs and could be fatal as well.
Only after keeping all the pros and cons in mind, one must consider surgery as an alternative to losing weight.
